On your left, right, and everywhere in between. Seriously, how many characters can you legally fit into one movie?
The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has landed, and it brings with it some serious starpower and more than a few bombshells (maybe). Clocking in at just two and a half minutes in length, this trailer gives us a rather chunky look at who from the MCU we can expect to see in this blockbuster crossover.
We kick off with Mutants, as Professor Xavier, played by Patrick Stewart, witnesses an explosion. The start of an incursion? The arrival of Doom? A gas leak? Who’s to know? We do then get our first look at Doctor Doom, played by the former Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., arriving in full supervillain style.
Without going beat-for-beat, this trailer is stacked with characters and references. We get the full Fantastic Four, a proper Avengers Tower in New York, Bucky, Ant-Man, and Sam Wilson Captain America standing for a school photo, and even the Thunderbolts New Avengers- remember them?
In this Thor-centric trailer, we see Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, fighting Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, The Thing meeting the Wakandans, and Mystique, played once again by Rebecca Romijn, fighting Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh.
I’m out of breath recapping all of the characters and unique combinations of characters that I spotted in one damn trailer. And that, my friends, is a slightly worrying sign. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of “who are you meant to be” moments in the previous team-up movies, but Doomsday is going to go nuclear with first-time introductions and tense reunions. The end of the trailer sees Thor sharing words with a seemingly returning Steve Rogers, complete with Mjolnir swapping, but we’re also going to see these long-time Avengers meet a very Tony Stark-looking Doctor Doom, so that’ll be a whole thing too.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good team-up movie, and the Avengers titles have largely delivered where a lot of the MCU has not over the past five years, but woof. I’m just not sure where we’re going to get any progression in the runtime when everyone needs to shake hands with everyone else.
Anyway, enough of my rambling; take a look at the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday for yourself:
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theatres on December 18.
