Sony is still forging forward with it’s vision of an all-digital future, now going so far as to openly warn customers picking up a disc based PlayStation 5 console that after January 2028 you will no longer be able to buy PlayStation games on discs for the PS5.
This bit of news came from a Twitter user known as BehindTheTimes, identifying the multilingual sticker warning and its purpose:
The full message reads:
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and through retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released before January 2028 will continue to be compatible with this console.
While only seen in a few European countries currently, it would be safe to assume that this message will start to pop up on all disc-based PlayStation 5 consoles before long. Being a sticker, there is every reason to expect that underpaid retail employees are being told to slap this ill omen on the products before the Christmas season kicks into consumer high-gear.
A similar message can even be seen when purchasing a disc drive from the online store, showing that Sony wants to be really consistent with the messaging that they tried to warn you.
Sony heads actually commented on the less-than-stellar customer response to the news during a recent earnings results Q&A – with Sony CFO Lin Tao saying the following:
“To this decision we have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forward those views to us”
Yeah. Various opinions. That’s one way to describe it.
