We all assumed another trailer for GTA VI was imminent, but I don’t think anyone would’ve made money betting on where we would be watching the trailer.
Rockstar Games has announced that an “extended look” at its upcoming goliath of a crime simulator is set to premiere on August 28 at 5am AEST. The headline gives away the ghost, but the real oddity with this trailer is that it’ll be dropping on Netflix…behind a paywall.
Granted, Rockstar has assured everyone that the trailer will also be uploaded to the developer’s YouTube channel a few hours later at 11am, but it’s still a wild move.
The mention of a paywall seems insignificant, given everyone and their dog is subscribed to Netflix, but it’s a bit of a nasty move all the same. Yes, folks will be waiting with teeth bared to rip it and upload it to YouTube, and an official upload is only a few hours delayed, but airing a vital trailer for what is likely to be the largest entertainment release of all time feels wrong.
In any event, this feels like a bigger deal than it already was thanks to this swing, so I suppose it’s done the job. I’m almost as interested to see the stats on how many people tune in to watch the trailer as I am in watching the thing myself.
We want to hear from you. What do you make of GTA VI’s latest trailer debuting on Netflix? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
