I feel the need – the need for someone to be my pilot so I can enjoy the new Battlefield 6 content without embarrassing myself with my poor skills in a jet.
The second wave of content for Battlefield 6 Season 4 has just gone live, bringing with it a bunch of new stuff for players to get into. Titled Top Gun, this collab brings various elements from the blockbuster film series to the game, including two limited-time game modes and three characters from Top Gun: Maverick, voiced by the actors who portrayed them.
Before we get to that, we should first talk Wake Island. Yes, the fan favourite map that debuted in Battlefield 1942 is back yet again for another trip around the sun. The giant U-shaped archipelago offers plenty of opportunities for both vehicle-based and infantry shenanigans. Much like Tsuru Reef, this bad boy will be heavily weighted towards aquatic vehicles, so much so that the two HQ points are aircraft carriers on either side of the map.
Alongside the new map, a new mode comes with the mid-season update. Two, in fact. Carrier Strike is the premier mode here, with two teams attempting to destroy each other’s aircraft carrier, or eliminate the M-COMS aboard them. Matches have a 30-minute limit, and draws are possible, though unlikely.
The second mode, found within REDSEC, is Fighter Sweep. This fighter-jet-only mode runs for ten lightning-fast minutes and features six squads of two players, jumping into the cockpit of the new F-74A Seacat or the F/A-81F Super Spectre. One player jumps in as the pilot, while the other works as the Weapons Systems Officer, managing all of the ordnance.
Speaking of which, both the F-74A Seacat and the F/A-81F Super Spectre will be available beyond the Fighter Sweep mode, giving squads the chance to team up and take to the skies in two-man cockpits.
It wouldn’t be a crossover/collab without some Top Gun characters stopping by. Various Top Gun-themed skins and cosmetics will be available, with Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, voiced by Miles Teller; Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd, voiced by Lewis Pullman; and Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates, voiced by Charles Parnell all in the mix.
Last but not least, the Interdictor sniper rifle is the longest-range rifle in the game, designed for extreme long-range shots. I can’t wait to be picked off by this menace time and again.
