Now stay with me here; I think this might appeal to me more than Paul W. S. Anderson’s take.
Following a tantalising teaser trailer released back in May, we now have a full-fat, full-length trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil to pick apart. In this two-and-a-half-minute clip, we see medical courier Bryan’s go from cold and overworked to frantic and terrified, as he hits a woman with his car, only for her to go ahead and walk away from the incident. Though I wouldn’t bet on her being alive in the conventional sense.
This trailer sets the tone incredibly well, with the bulk of the tension coming from Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, fumbling around an abandoned (maybe) cottage, searching for slugs to load into a shotgun he found above the hearth. Oh, and it looks like that lady he hit is fine, because she’s sprinting full speed at the house in the snow.
I’ve got more to say about the trailer, but why don’t you give it a watch first:
Director Zach Creggor, the man behind Weapons and Barbarian, is known for palpable tension, an unsettling sense of dread, and employing a surprising tinge of dark humour in his projects. This little slice of Resident Evil we got today confirms to me that these hallmarks will be present in the film. Furthermore, it’s looking like this will capture the feel of Resi, with Bryan scrambling for supplies in a remote location, stumbling upon typewriters and slowly opening creaky doors.
We’ve had a teaser, we know how long the movie will be, and now we’ve been treated to a proper trailer; now we wait for the main event.

Resident Evil is set to release in theatres on September 18.
