The Latest Trailer For Clayface Promises A Heavy Body Horror Ride

I wasn’t immediately sold on a standalone Clayface film, especially during the early stages of DC’s new cinematic reset, but hot damn does this new trailer make a case for why it fits.

A new, full-length trailer for DC’s Clayface dropped today, and it’s a doozy. The two-and-a-half-minute clip shows actor Matt Hagen’s life quickly devolve into despair after a mob boss’s attack leaves his face disfigured. We see Hagen sign himself up for clinical trials involving experimental substances that return him to his once beautiful self…for a time.

We’ve seen snippets of the grotesque in previous stills and trailers, but this latest showing gives us a proper look at Hagen’s transformation into the shape-shifting Gotham villain we all know. Skin turns to clay and seals the poor dude’s eyes shut, his face literally begins to melt away, and we even see the former actor turning into a human puddle in a bath.

You know what, take a look at the Clayface trailer for yourself:

We’re firmly into true body horror territory here, and it’s not too surprising when you see the names attached. Director James Watkins is best known for horror titles Speak No Evil and The Woman in Black, while screenwriting duties have gone to genre giant Mike Flannigan, known for Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House.

The final moments of this new trailer hint that we see an appearance of Clayface’s true, huge, monstrous form, which will be exciting for the Bat-fans among us. It’s not yet known how this film will relate to the wider DC slate, but I have hopes that it will be a solid standalone experience regardless.

Clayface is set to hit theatres on October 21.

We want to hear from you. Does this body horror direction work for you? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
