I know that a release date is great and all, but there’s a real headline here, and it’s got eight arms.
A new trailer for Archetype Entertainment’s debut title, Exodus, debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live, revealing that the single-player RPG will be launching on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on April 8, 2027.
Obviously, that is fantastic news for everyone who’s been keeping tabs on this Mass Effect-style sci-fi third-person RPG, but saying that this is a release date reveal trailer is burying the lead. The bigger takeaway, for this sci-fi enjoyer, comes in the form of the newly showcased companion character: Salt.
Yes, the trailer was a vehicle for the release date, but it also highlighted the relationship between the game’s protagonist, Jun Aslan, and Salt, an awakened octopus that pilots a god damn MECH.
Yes, you read that correctly: one of your companions is a bounty-hunting, talking, intelligent octopus that gets around in a great big mechanised exosuit that sports a metal tentacle. For real, if you weren’t interested in Exodus already, this has to be enough to get your attention.
Don’t just take my word for this excellence; take a look at the release date trailer for yourself:
If the gameplay and overall vibe feel familiar, it may be because of the minds behind Archetype Entertainment. Former BioWare veterans James Ohlen, Chad Robertson, and Drew Karpyshyn head up this new outfit, with Exodus being their debut game.
A space-faring epic with important choices, character dynamics, third-person action, and a universe-threatening adversary does sound familiar, but good gravy, am I keen for this game. Add Salt the octopus into the mix, and this has quickly become one of my most anticipated titles of 2027.
We want to hear from you. Is Exodus ticking your sci-fi boxes so far? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
