In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power—Green Lantern’s light! I’ll need to recite this a few times to avoid entering my credit card details on Kickstarter.
Tabletop publisher Cryptozoic Entertainment has revealed the latest set in the long-running DC Deck-Building Game series: Green Lantern Corps. Outside of the theme, we know very little about the core mechanics of this new full set, but the key art certainly suggests that the entire Power Ring spectrum will be present. The set will be available on Kickstarter, with the game’s announcement on the platform allowing those keen to register their interest to receive updates when the campaign goes live.
For those unfamiliar with DC Deck-Building, let me tell you something: change that immediately. Deck-building card games are a dime a dozen in the hobby, but Cryptozoic’s DC-themed version is by far my favourite and most played. The core concept sees two to five players progressively building out a deck of cards, all with their own abilities, victory points, and power. Players will take turns playing a hand, often causing various effects to trigger, adding up their power total, and using that to purchase new cards from a communal line-up.
DC Deck-Building also has a deck of high-cost super villains (or super heroes depending on the set), that can be purchased and added to a deck. Doing so will reveal the next card in that stack and inflict an attack that all players must face. Once every card from that stack has been purchased, the game ends. The player who accumulated the most victory points comes away with the win.
Beginning with the original set released back in 2012, Crytozoic has released many new sets, all with different theming and gimmicks. Dark Knights Metal, Heroes Unite, Injustice, and Justice League Dark are but a few examples, with the publisher even releasing co-op, two-player, and team-based variants as well.
I’ve been playing DC Deck-Building for over a decade at this point, and even have a championship belt that’s hotly contested at my board game table, so you could say I’m a touch excited to see what Green Lantern Corps has in store for us.
